F.A.Q.
Do I need to submit anything else besides
this form to apply?
If you're only applying to a Research Assistant position, the answer is no. However, if you're (also) applying to a PhD, MPhil, or MFA position, then the answer is yes. You need to also submit your complete application in the HKUST-GZ online application system:

I'm new to quantum computing (with creative pratice) and I am reading a lot about it in order to inform my research project proposal, should I still apply?
Yes, I don't expect anyone to become a specialist in all things related to Quantum Computer Music before they even start the PhD, that's the goal of doing the PhD... I just want ppl to have had a chance to immerse themselves in it, be aware of what is out there and hopefully find something that they find exciting to pursue and develop for a couple of years. A good research project is basically a big challenge to pursue (for which you shouldn't know the answer to already), and a practice-based one should involve the creative practice at some point/to some extent - as the starting point, or what you want to create at the end, or somewhere in between.
I'm feeling a bit lost. Where should I start to get a good sense of the field of quantum computing and creative practice in order to be able to submit a good application and research project proposal?
You can find different projects listed on the xQAP group page and OCH's personal page:
https://omarcostahamido.com . And you can find even more about the field in the database and forum of the open access project
Community.:
https://community.quantumland.art . It may be good idea to also check out the several lines of research being presented at the ISQCMC conference [
1] and some of the books that emerged from there [
2] [
3].
I really want to study with OCH/interact with xQAP group, is it really only possible if my main research topic is working with quantum computing?
No. Only the
funded PhD and RA positions being announced on the xQAP group page need, indeed, to be very focused from the start to work on quantum computing, because of the funding that was allocated to support these positions. However, at the end of the day we do want to have more people as part of the xQAP Group besides these 3 or 4 funded positions. And I am happy to supervise students whose work relates to the research areas listed here:
https://cma.hkust-gz.edu.cn/faculty-regular/omar-costa-hamido/
Are there any other opportunities to be involved besides the group funded PhD and RA positions then?
Yes, there are MPhil positions (funded by the university not me) and it works in a slightly different way (search
Red Bird MPhil program), applications are evaluated by an independent central university committee, not me. I can become academic supervisor of an MPhil student in their second year. There is now also a new MFA program (with tuition, not funded by me or University, afaik), which differs from the MPhil in the sense that outputs are essentially creative work and exhibitions, not papers. And there are also the PhD positions not funded by me, for which i can still be supervisor - this is not a separate application, it just depends on the offer that you end up receiving at the end of the application process.
What does PGS means?
